From here you will also visit Beach Cemetery, where many of these men were buried - John Simpson ‘the man with the donkey’ is also buried here. Your guide will then take you further up into the hills following the battle lines, from here you will see the very moving statue of a Turkish soldier carrying a wounded Australian Digger - preserved trenches - Lone Pine Cemetery and Memorial to the Australian Missing - Courtney’s Post – etc. Throughout these areas breathtaking views of the whole battlefields can be seen. Carrying further up into the hills you will see a Turkish cemetery and the 57th Regiment Memorial. Eventually you will reach Chunuck Bair- the Turkish positions so desperately wanted but never taken by the Allied troops. On the top of this ridge the New Zealand National Memorial and the Ataturk Statue stand side by side overlooking the hills and beaches where so many men lost their lives. From these positions Suvla Bay and the Salt Lake can be clearly seen. After this incredibly moving day your guide will take you back to your hotel in Canakkale. |

![]() Day 3 - After breakfast you will be met by your guide who will take you down to the southern sector of the Gallipoli battlefields. This is a must if you want to get the ‘whole picture’ of the nature of this battle. Starting with S Beach, the landing beach of the South Wales Borderers and a sector that was later taken over by the French troops, you will then continue around Morto Bay where a visit to the infrequently visited French Cemetery is highly recommended (this is the only French Cemetery of the battlefields). The other landing beaches will then be explored - V beach and Cape Helles with the British Memorial to the Missing, W Beach, the Lancashire Landing, etc. Your guide will then take you towards Krithia (now known as Alcitepe) and the Allied front line where the men who landed at this end of the peninsula could go no further – never meeting up with the ANZACs further up the coast. Your guide will then drive you back to Canakkale to catch the evening coach back to Istanbul. (Or, if you have opted for private transport throughout, your guide will drive you back to Istanbul). As a private tour, this is a suggested itinerary only - it is possible to modify the tour to best suit your requirements. What this tour includes: ![]() |

John Simpson was a stretcher bearer with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign.
After landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, he obtained a donkey and began carrying wounded British Empire soldiers from the frontline to the beach, for evacuation.
He continued this work for three and a half weeks, often under fire, until he himself was killed. John Simpson now lies at rest in Beach Cemetery.
