Our company, Terres de Memoire, already highly regarded for the quality of our battlefield tours of the Somme and Flanders, is dedicated to the memory of all who fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Great War.
We are now delighted to be able to offer guided visits of the Gallipoli Battlefield. One of the aspects we are keen to emphasise is that this battle was fought by many different nations and we definitely recommend that a visit to the whole peninsula is necessary to understand the dimensions of the entire battle.
Visiting the British battlefields, the French sectors and the Turkish cemeteries and memorials as well as the ANZAC sector enables you to get “the whole picture”.
| Separating Europe from Asia is the narrow strait of the Dardanelles – the only passage between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. This stretch of water and the surrounding land was to be the scene of one of the most tragic operations of the First World War. |

The Gallipoli Campaign started with an Allied naval attack against the numerous Turkish forts defending this area of great strategic importance. The idea was to capture Istanbul and secure a sea route through to Russia. The 18th March 1915 marks a day of national celebrations for the Turks as they managed to stop the naval attack, forcing the Allies to reconsider their strategies. |

| The Allies’ next endeavour was to land troops onto the peninsula and force the Dardanelles Strait with a joint naval and infantry attack. This commenced on the 25th April 1915 – the day that is now known as ANZAC Day, commemorating the huge role that the newly formed ANZAC Corps played in this combined Franco-British battle. It was the first – but not the last – time that the Australians and New Zealanders would show both the Allies and the enemy just what they were capable of. | ||
Accompanied by a professional English-speaking guide you will be able to explore these exceptional sites - from the landing beaches and Turkish forts to the preserved trenches, cemeteries and memorials. A truly moving and unforgettable experience.
